Cruise Drink Packages, Gratuities & Add-Ons Explained

Cruise extras can quietly double the cost of your vacation, or save you real money if you buy the right ones at the right time. Here is how each add-on actually works and what we tell clients to buy.

Drink Packages

Unlimited drink packages typically run $60 to $100 per person per day plus an automatic gratuity of 18 to 20 percent. Most lines require all adults in the same cabin to purchase.

The math is simple. Divide the daily package cost by the average drink price on the ship, usually $9 to $15 for a cocktail. If you will drink five or more alcoholic beverages a day, every day, the package wins. Under that, pay as you go.

Buy pre-cruise rather than onboard. Pre-cruise pricing is typically 20 to 30 percent cheaper, and lines run flash sales at Black Friday and during Wave Season in January through March.

Do not forget the middle options. Soda packages, coffee cards, and water packages cost a fraction of the alcohol package and cover most families.

Virgin Voyages does not sell a traditional unlimited package. Essential drinks such as still water, drip coffee, tea, and soda are included, and their Bar Tab model gives bonus credit rather than unlimited pours.

Gratuities

Most lines auto-charge $16 to $18.50 per person per day, and suites are higher. For a family of four on a 7-night sailing that is roughly $450 to $520 before any bar tips.

Some lines let you prepay at booking, which locks in the current rate against increases. Virgin Voyages includes gratuities in the fare. Group bookings and certain promotions frequently include prepaid gratuities, which is one of the perks we negotiate.

WiFi

Typically $10 to $25 per device per day, with meaningful discounts for buying the full voyage pre-cruise and for multi-device plans. Basic browsing plans do not support video calls or streaming; the premium tier does.

Virgin Voyages includes basic WiFi. If you need to work from the ship, buy the premium tier pre-cruise and expect variability in remote Caribbean waters.

Specialty Dining

Individual restaurants run $25 to $75 per person. Dining packages bundle three to five meals at a discount.

Our advice is to try one or two specialty restaurants rather than buying the full package. The included main dining room and buffet are genuinely good on most modern ships, and travelers who prepay five specialty meals often end up eating dinner on a schedule they did not want.

Book on embarkation day for the best time slots, and ask about first-night discounts, which most lines offer.

Shore Excursions

Ship-sponsored excursions cost more than booking independently, sometimes considerably more. The premium buys one thing that matters: if the excursion runs late, the ship waits.

Book through the ship for tight port windows, remote inland destinations, and anything weather dependent. Book independently for beach days, easy walking tours, and ports where you are comfortable navigating on your own.

Spa, Photos, and the Rest

Spa treatments are priced above land equivalents and are heavily discounted on port days when the ship is empty. Photo packages only make sense if you will actually buy multiple prints. Casino, arcade, and premium fitness classes are all a la carte.

What We Recommend

1. Drink package: yes, if you will genuinely have five or more drinks a day. Buy pre-cruise.
2. WiFi: yes if you need it, and buy the voyage-long plan pre-cruise rather than daily onboard.
3. Specialty dining: try one or two, not the full package.
4. Shore excursions: mix ship-sponsored and independent based on risk.
5. Travel insurance: always.
6. Prepaid gratuities: yes, to lock the rate and avoid a large final bill.
7. Photo package: usually skip.

Budget Rule of Thumb

On a mainstream line, plan on 30 to 50 percent above your cabin fare for extras. On a more inclusive line such as Virgin Voyages, plan on 15 to 25 percent, because tips, basic WiFi, and all restaurants are already in the fare.
