Europe has pushed the launch of ETIAS back once again, this time without a firm date attached. What was billed as the biggest change to transatlantic travel in a generation is now, officially, a moving target.

What ETIAS Actually Is

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a pre-travel screening requirement for visa-exempt visitors, including U.S. passport holders, traveling to the Schengen Area.

It is not a visa. Translation: you do not need ETIAS to travel to Europe right now.

What You Still Need at the Border

The delay changes one thing. It does not change the rest of the checklist.

A passport valid at least three months beyond your departure date from Europe — and issued within the last ten years. This is the single most common reason travelers are turned away, and it has nothing to do with ETIAS.

Proof of onward or return travel. Border officers can and do ask.

Awareness of the 90/180 rule. Your days in the Schengen Area are counted cumulatively, not per country.

Biometric registration at entry. Europe's automated entry-exit process captures fingerprints and facial images for non-EU visitors. Expect this to add time at passport control during peak periods, particularly at large hubs.

Travel insurance. Not legally mandatory for most visitors, but the smartest hundred dollars in your budget.
