Kakum National Park: Canopy Walk & Rainforest Adventure

Kakum National Park is a 375-square-kilometer rainforest reserve in Ghana's Central Region. Best known for its canopy walkway suspended high above the forest floor, Kakum is a favorite add-on for visitors who have just experienced the emotional weight of Cape Coast and Elmina castles.

The Canopy Walkway The park's famous walkway is made of rope bridges and wooden planks hanging roughly 30 meters above the ground. It stretches across seven bridges and several tree platforms, offering a bird's-eye view of the forest canopy. Walking it is thrilling but safe — the bridges are secure, and guides accompany visitors. The views of green layers, mist, and distant birds make it one of the most photographed experiences in Ghana.

Wildlife in Kakum Kakum is home to forest elephants, leopards, bongos, civets, and over 250 species of birds. The dense forest makes large mammals hard to spot, but the birdlife is exceptional. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching, and the park's guides are excellent at spotting hornbills, touracos, and kingfishers.

Forest Trails For visitors who prefer to stay on the ground, several trails lead through primary rainforest. Guides explain medicinal plants, forest ecology, and the cultural beliefs local communities hold about the forest. The walk is humid and shaded, so light clothing and water are essential.

Best Time to Visit Kakum is open year-round. The dry season (November–March) offers clearer trails and less mud. The rainy season is quieter, with the forest at its lushest, but the walkway may be closed during heavy storms.
