Ghanaian food is bold, communal, and deeply regional. Whether you are eating at a roadside stall in Accra, a village kitchen in the Volta Region, or a beach restaurant in Cape Coast, every meal tells you something about the place.

Accra Market Food Osu Street Market and the surrounding area are excellent for first tastes. Try grilled plantain with groundnuts, meat pies, fresh coconut water, and sobolo (hibiscus drink). At night, the street comes alive with skewers, fried yam, and music from nearby bars.

Waakye A breakfast staple made of rice and beans, waakye is typically served with spaghetti, boiled egg, fried plantain, gari, and your choice of stew or fish. It is filling, affordable, and loved across Ghana. Every neighborhood has its own waakye vendor, and locals are loyal to their favorite.

Jollof Rice No West African food conversation is complete without jollof. Ghanaian jollof is tomato-based, smoky, and often served at parties, weddings, and Sunday family gatherings. Pair it with grilled chicken or fried plantain for the full experience.

Fufu & Banku with Tilapia Fufu is pounded cassava and plantains served with light soup, groundnut soup, or palm nut soup. Banku is a fermented corn-and-cassava dough, traditionally served with spicy pepper sauce and grilled tilapia. Both are eaten with the right hand and shared from communal bowls — a social ritual as much as a meal.

Kelewele, Red Red, and Street Snacks Kelewele is spicy fried plantain cubes, often sold by women at night markets. Red Red is a comforting bean stew with fried plantain. These dishes are perfect for travelers who want authentic flavor without a formal restaurant setting.

Drinks Try fresh pineapple or mango juice, palm wine, Star or Club beer, and locally produced chocolate drinks. Ghana is one of the world's largest cocoa producers, so anything chocolate-related is worth tasting.

Our Ghana Heritage Tour includes meals featuring authentic Ghanaian cuisine, with dietary restrictions accommodated by advance notice.
