Why the Egypt overnight changes everything

Most Mediterranean itineraries that touch Egypt give you one day in port and a long bus ride against the clock. This one does not.

Scarlet Lady arrives in Alexandria at 6:30 in the morning on day five and does not leave until 8:00 in the evening on day six. That is roughly 38 hours in Egypt. It is enough time for a full day out to Cairo and the pyramids at Giza without watching the gangway clock, and still have an evening and a second day to spare.

One thing worth knowing so nobody is surprised: ships do not dock in Cairo itself. The port is Alexandria, and Cairo and Giza are an excursion from there. You will see this sailing described as a "Cairo overnight," and that is the excursion, not the dock.

The islands, and why Mykonos is the night to plan around

Santorini is the one everybody already has in her head: the caldera, the white walls, the blue domes. You have a full day, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Ephesus is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean, and you arrive at 8:00 AM, early enough to walk it before the heat of the day.

Rhodes gives you a medieval old town inside its walls, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Mykonos is the one to plan your group dinner around. The ship stays in port until 10:00 PM, so you get the island in the evening: sunset over the water, dinner, and time to linger instead of racing back aboard.

Three sea days break it up. Those are the days for the spa, the pool and doing nothing at all.

• From $2,690 per person, double occupancy. That is the Insider cabin at Virgin's Lock It In rate, which means no changes once booked. We say that plainly so nobody is caught off guard.
• Deposit: starts at $921.20 per cabin.
• Final payment is due February 10, 2027.
• Gratuities are not included. Virgin's prepaid service charge is $400 per cabin, or $440 if paid on board.
• Dining at the ship's restaurants, entertainment and fitness classes are part of the Virgin fare, so the price is not just a room.
