Best Time to Visit Kenya for Safari (Month-by-Month Guide)

Timing a Kenya safari well is the difference between watching thousands of wildebeest pour across the Mara River and looking at empty grassland. Here is what each month actually delivers on the ground — wildlife, weather, crowds, and price.

January to February: Hot, Dry, Excellent

Short-rain grass has greened the plains and calving is underway to the south, which means predators are active and easy to find. Temperatures run 75-85°F with clear skies, and photography is superb. This is peak season for a reason. Book six or more months ahead.

March to May: The Long Rains

Kenya's low season. Afternoon downpours are heavy, some tracks turn to mud, and a handful of camps close entirely. In exchange you get 30-40% discounts, near-empty reserves, spectacular skies, and the best birding of the year as migrants arrive. Experienced travelers who have already seen the Big Five often prefer this window.

June: The Season Turns

Rains taper, grass is still tall and green, and rates remain moderate before the July surge. The migration herds are moving north through the Serengeti and beginning to reach the Mara's southern edge late in the month. One of the most underrated times to travel.

July to October: Migration and Peak Demand

The famous river crossings happen here, most reliably from late July through September. Game viewing across the board is at its best because the vegetation is short and water sources are concentrated. It is also the most crowded and most expensive stretch of the year. For July or August, book nine to twelve months out or accept second-choice camps.

November: Short Rains, Big Value

Brief afternoon showers rarely interrupt drives, the landscape greens up beautifully, and pricing sits well below peak. Wildlife remains resident and plentiful in the Mara. If you want quality game viewing without peak crowds, November is our most common recommendation for repeat clients.

December: Two Different Months

Early December stays quiet and reasonably priced. From roughly the 20th, holiday demand pushes rates to peak levels and camps fill months in advance. If you are traveling over Christmas, plan a year ahead.

Beyond the Mara

• Amboseli is best June-October and January-February, when Kilimanjaro is most likely to be cloud-free
• Lake Nakuru's flamingo numbers fluctuate with water levels rather than season
• Samburu is strongest in the dry months, when wildlife concentrates on the Ewaso Nyiro River
• The coast, including Diani, is most pleasant December-March and June-October, and wettest in April-May

Our April 2026 departure is deliberately timed to the start of the green season: resident Big Five game viewing is still strong, the Mara is dramatically green and uncrowded, temperatures are comfortable, and availability at the best camps is far better than in July or August. Travelers who prioritize the river crossings specifically should target late July through September instead, and we build those departures on request.
