Sample 9-Day Kenya Safari Itinerary: Nairobi to Diani Beach
Most people planning a first safari struggle with the same question: what does a day in Kenya actually feel like? Below is our most popular 9-day route, hour by hour, so you can picture yourself in it before you ever book.
The Shape of the Trip
The route is built in three acts. Two days in and around Nairobi to shake off jet lag and ease into East Africa. Four days of high-intensity wildlife across the Maasai Mara, the Great Rift Valley, and the Mount Kenya highlands. Three days on the Indian Ocean coast to decompress before flying home. It works because the hardest days come while your energy is highest, and the beach lands exactly when your body wants it.
Day 1: Arrive Nairobi
Most US flights land in the evening. You are met inside the terminal, cleared through immigration with your eTA already approved, and driven to your lodge. If you arrive earlier in the day, we add the Giraffe Centre — a raised feeding platform where Rothschild giraffes take pellets straight from your hand — and dinner at Carnivore, Nairobi's legendary open-fire grill.
Day 2: Nairobi Cultural Day
A full day that most itineraries skip.
- David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for the 11 AM orphaned elephant feeding
- Karen Blixen Museum, the farmhouse from Out of Africa
- Kazuri Bead Centre, a women's cooperative you can shop directly
- Afternoon game drive in Nairobi National Park, where rhinos graze against the city skyline
Day 3: Fly to the Maasai Mara
A 45-minute bush flight replaces a punishing six-hour drive. You land on a dirt strip, transfer straight into a game vehicle, and your first drive begins on the way to camp. Most travelers see their first lions before check-in. Sundowners at a lookout point, then dinner under the stars.
Day 4: Full Day in the Mara
The big one. Out at 6 AM with coffee in the vehicle, because predators are still moving. Breakfast is served in the bush from a folding table. Midday is for the Maasai village visit — a real one, arranged through our guide's own family connections, not a staged performance. Afternoon drive runs until the light goes gold, which is when the photographs happen.
Day 5: Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru
You drive out through the Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint, one of the most photographed panoramas in Africa. Lake Nakuru delivers flamingo flocks and one of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries. Picnic lunch on the lake shore, then a slower evening with spa service at the lodge.
Day 6: Mount Kenya Region
Coffee country. You walk a working farm, learn how the cherries are picked, washed, and roasted, then taste the result with the mountain in view. An afternoon forest walk and an evening bonfire with local musicians closes the highland portion of the trip.
Day 7: Fly to Diani Beach
A morning flight to Mombasa and a transfer south to Diani, consistently rated among Africa's best beaches. Afternoon snorkeling on the reef, sunset dhow sail with a Swahili dinner aboard, and a massage under the palms if you want one.
Day 8: Mombasa Heritage
Old Town Mombasa, Fort Jesus, and the spice market — five hundred years of Swahili, Portuguese, Omani, and Indian influence in a few walkable blocks. Seafood lunch, then final craft shopping before heading back to the sand.
Day 9: Departure
A slow breakfast over the ocean, one last swim, then a private transfer to Mombasa airport with lounge access before your international connection.
