U.S. Cities Where Wellness Is Thriving Right Now — And the Retreat We Built Around It
AF Travel & Tours | aftravels.com
Wellness stopped being an amenity somewhere around 2024. It is now the reason people book.
Travelers are choosing destinations the way they used to choose gyms: by what the place does to their nervous system. Hot springs over happy hours. Sunrise hikes over shopping districts. Sleep programs, breathwork, cold plunge, sound baths, mineral pools, and the increasingly popular itinerary item known as "nothing."
Across the United States, a handful of cities have built entire economies around that shift. Here is where wellness is genuinely thriving right now — and why we designed our own retreat, Open to Overflow, around the same principles.
The U.S. Cities Leading the Wellness Boom
Sedona and the Scottsdale Corridor, Arizona
Arizona is the current center of gravity for American wellness travel, and it is not close.
Sedona built its reputation on red rock energy vortexes, but what keeps travelers returning is infrastructure: guided desert meditation, indigenous-informed healing practices, sound baths held in canyons with natural reverb, and some of the most consistent sunrise weather in the country. Scottsdale, ninety minutes south, layers on the resort side — destination spas, medical wellness, sleep and longevity programming, and a hospitality workforce that has been doing this for forty years.
Together they offer the rare combination of true wilderness stillness and five-star recovery, with a major international airport in between.
Asheville, North Carolina
The Blue Ridge Mountains, a deep herbalism and folk-medicine tradition, forest bathing trails, and a food scene built on what grows within a hundred miles. Asheville does wellness without the gloss — it is the choice for travelers who want restoration that feels earned rather than purchased.
Austin, Texas
Austin turned recovery into a lifestyle sector: cold plunge and sauna studios on ordinary corners, lake swims at dawn, an outsized yoga and breathwork community, and a wellness-tech scene that keeps pushing the programming forward. It is the most social of the wellness cities — good for travelers who want restoration with a pulse.
Miami, Florida
Miami's wellness identity runs on water, movement, and longevity medicine. Beach workouts, Pilates and reformer culture, IV and regenerative clinics, plant-forward dining, and a Caribbean and Latin American influence that makes the city feel like an easier gateway than it is. It is the strongest choice for travelers who want wellness without giving up nightlife.
Palm Springs, California
Mineral hot springs, mid-century desert design, and a slower pace that has drawn burned-out city dwellers since the 1950s. Small-property retreats dominate here, which makes Palm Springs one of the best domestic options for private, low-headcount group programming.
Portland and the Pacific Northwest
Forest immersion, coastal air, hot springs, and a culture that treats time outdoors as basic maintenance rather than an activity. The Pacific Northwest is the most seasonal option on this list — and the most restorative when the timing is right.
Why the Wellness Shift Is Real, Not a Trend Cycle
Three things changed at once.
- Travelers started measuring trips by recovery rather than by coverage. The eight-city itinerary lost its appeal.
- Wellness went from solo to communal. Group retreats, friend collectives, sister circles, and multigenerational family restoration trips are now among the fastest-growing segments we book.
- The programming got serious. Sleep, hormones, stress load, and longevity are being addressed by properties that used to sell cucumber water.
For our clients — many of whom are caretakers, professionals, business owners, and the person everyone else calls first — that shift matters. Rest is no longer indulgent. It is strategic.
Introducing Open to Overflow — April 2027
We built Open to Overflow for the traveler who pours out constantly and rarely gets refilled.
It is a wellness retreat designed around restoration wherever the final setting lands: the quiet spaciousness of Arizona, the rainforest and thermal waters of Costa Rica, or the sun-soaked renewal of Mexico. The experience will center on silence you can actually hear, intentional community, and enough unscheduled time to let your body catch up with your calendar.
What we can confirm now:
- When: April 2027
- Possible destinations: Arizona, Costa Rica, or Mexico
- Format: Small-group, women-centered, restoration-first
- Pace: Fewer activities, longer stays, real buffer days
- Programming focus: Guided meditation and breathwork, gentle movement, sound healing, nourishment-forward dining, journaling and reflection sessions, and generous open space
What is still being finalized:
The final destination is still under review. Arizona, Costa Rica, and Mexico are all being considered for this first land-based wellness experience, with the choice guided by the right property, programming, accessibility, and overall retreat experience. Each option offers its own way to exhale: desert stillness, tropical renewal, or a restorative coastal setting.
We will confirm the final destination, property, and full pricing before deposits open. Anyone on the interest list gets the announcement first, along with first access to rooms.
Who This Retreat Is For
- The woman who plans everyone else's trips and never takes her own
- Professionals coming off a heavy season who need more than a long weekend
- Friend groups who want shared restoration rather than a party itinerary
- Solo travelers who want community without pressure — roommate matching available
- Anyone who has said out loud, in the last year, "I just need to be still for a minute"
How to Get on the List
Open to Overflow will be capped intentionally. Small group, real attention, no crowd.
